Dominican Republic Invites Proposals for Battery Storage Systems
The Dominican Republic’s state transmission company, Eted, has announced that 39 companies have met the qualifications in its recent call for proposals related to battery energy storage systems (BESS). This initiative is part of the country’s strategy to enhance grid dispatch capabilities in light of an increase in renewable energy contributions.
The request for expressions of interest was initiated in July, targeting projects that would integrate with the national interconnected power system. This solicitation was open to entities involved in the wholesale power market that possess the necessary concessions for operating generation facilities and are authorized for commercial activities.
Starting from September 8, the qualified companies will be invited to submit their project proposals. The list of 39 companies includes notable names such as:
- AES Andres DR
- AES Dominicana Renewable Energy
- Coastal Petroleum Dominicana
- Energas
- Complejo Metalúrgico Dominicano
- Cotoperi Solar FV
- Desarrollos Fotovoltaicos DSS
- Emerald Solar Energy
- Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Haina
- Karpowership Dominican Republic
- Natural World Energy
- Tropigas Dominicana
- WCG Energy
Eted has plans to establish a capacity of 200 megawatts and 1,400 megawatt-hours of battery energy storage across three different locations as part of its efforts to improve power dispatch amid the growing share of variable renewable energy sources in the grid.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in the Dominican Republic’s energy sector, emphasizing the importance of integrating renewable energy and improving the reliability and efficiency of the national electricity supply.
Why It Matters
The move to qualify multiple companies for battery storage projects indicates a strategic shift toward enhancing the resilience and sustainability of the power grid in the Dominican Republic. As the country continues to integrate renewable energy sources, developing adequate storage solutions will be essential for managing energy supply and ensuring grid stability.
