Liverpool Football Club is currently in the process of searching for a new sporting director, following Richard Hughes’ recent departure to Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League. Hughes’ exit marks a significant change for the club, as he was the fourth sporting director since 2022, after Michael Edwards, Julian Ward, and Jorg Schmadtke.
Hughes had previously held the position of head of scouting operations at Liverpool, a role he assumed after being recruited by Edwards in March 2024. His departure was officially confirmed last weekend. Head coach Andoni Iraola commented on Hughes’ exit, stating that while it was not unexpected, he wished Hughes well in his future endeavors. Iraola emphasized that the club is continuing to work with individuals who have made critical decisions during the summer transfer period.
The search for Hughes’ replacement is currently led by FSG president Mike Gordon, who has taken a more active role in day-to-day operations of the club since Edwards stepped down in July. As the club navigates this transition, both internal contenders and external candidates are being considered for the sporting director position.
Potential Internal Candidates
Julian Ward, who previously served as Liverpool’s sporting director, is considered a strong candidate for the role. Ward joined the club in 2012 and was appointed as assistant sporting director in 2020. During his time, he was directly involved in significant player signings and contract negotiations, including Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah. His close relationship with Gordon and continuation in the football development pathway role since leaving the sporting director position suggests he could be well-suited for the role again.
Pedro Marques, who stepped down as technical director at Benfica to become FSG’s director of football development in 2024, is also viewed as a valuable candidate. He has a robust background in player development and has been influential in establishing successful talent pathways.
Additionally, David Woodfine, who served as Hughes’ right-hand man and has a history with Liverpool since 2014, is considered a viable option. Woodfine transitioned through various roles at the club, enhancing their scouting and loan management strategies. His familiarity with Liverpool’s operations might position him as a strong contender.
As the club reshapes its management structure, the focus will be on ensuring a seamless transition in leadership while maintaining the competitive edge for which it is known.
Why It Matters
The appointment of a new sporting director is crucial for Liverpool, especially as the club adjusts to significant operational changes and prepares for future seasons. The right leader could influence player recruitment, foster talent development, and streamline the club’s strategic direction during a pivotal period. The decision will impact not only the current squad but also the long-term vision for Liverpool’s success in domestic and European competitions.
