Kapsch TrafficCom has secured a contract to modernize the national tolling system in the Dominican Republic. This initiative involves upgrading 20 toll plazas and 183 lanes throughout the country using Kapsch’s SmartToll solution.
Project Details and Expectations
The project, overseen by the state-owned roads operator RD Vial, aims to enhance the tolling infrastructure across the Caribbean nation. Kapsch will be responsible for providing ongoing maintenance and support in addition to the technological upgrades. Ramiro Virreira, the Executive Vice President for Latin America at Kapsch, expressed that this modernization project represents a significant advancement for the tolling infrastructure in the Dominican Republic.
Virreira emphasized that the initiative showcases not only the effectiveness and innovative nature of Kapsch’s technology but also the company’s extensive experience in international tolling. He noted the firm’s strong presence within the Latin American and Caribbean regions, which is integral to the project’s success.
This contract follows Kapsch’s previous engagements in the region, including a multi-lane free-flow tolling agreement in Chile announced last year. The company aims to leverage its technological expertise to streamline toll collection processes and improve user experience on Dominican highways.
Why It Matters
The modernization of the tolling system in the Dominican Republic is critical for enhancing roadway efficiency and revenue collection. Such developments can lead to improved traffic flow and contribute to better infrastructural management in the region. The partnership with Kapsch highlights the importance of adopting advanced technology in public infrastructure projects, potentially setting a standard for future initiatives throughout the Caribbean.
