LIV Golf has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States after incurring nearly $5 billion in losses since its establishment in 2021. The organization aims to use the bankruptcy process to restructure its finances and emerge as a more sustainable enterprise by 2027. Court filings reveal the extent of financial struggles as LIV’s expenditures have consistently outstripped its income, with significant funding from the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia ceasing in early 2026.
Financial Challenges Facing LIV Golf
LIV Golf’s financial troubles became apparent earlier this year when the Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced it would halt funding beyond 2026. Reports indicate that LIV Golf Ltd., which manages operations outside the U.S., had accumulated approximately $1.1 billion in losses by the end of 2024, with projections nearing $2 billion by the end of 2025. To date, PIF has contributed about $5.3 billion to LIV, which has seen no new capital influx since a $267 million investment seven months ago. Currently, LIV holds a loan from PIF amounting to $495 million.
The tour has spent lavishly to attract top golf talent, offering enormous contracts to several star players. The organization’s bankruptcy filing estimates liabilities exceeding $500 million, far surpassing its financial resources. LIV Golf’s restructuring plan, termed ‘LIV 2.0,’ suggests a new operational model with 52.5 percent of the tour to be owned by players, while 45 percent would go to new investors, such as the private equity firm BC Partners.
While LIV’s formal bankruptcy means it will seek to renegotiate player contracts, it remains to be seen how many players will be willing to remain with the tour. The current situation leaves many commitments up in the air as LIV navigates its legal and financial landscape.
LIV Golf has indicated its intention to continue operations with the aim of securing new sponsorships and commitments while focusing on the restructuring process. Proposed changes could potentially attract different investment partners, giving the organization another chance to stabilize.
Why It Matters
The legal and financial outcomes of LIV Golf’s bankruptcy could have widespread implications for professional golf, including player mobility between tours, sponsorship dynamics, and overall competition. The restructuring effort marks a crucial turning point for LIV Golf as it attempts to redefine its future in a highly competitive athletic landscape.
