Passenger traffic between the Dominican Republic and various Latin American countries has increased significantly since the launch of Arajet, the country’s national airline. The company announced during its fourth anniversary press conference that it had observed a 143% rise in passenger numbers from 2022 to the projected figures for 2026.
Significant Growth in Air Traffic
Arajet’s analysis, referred to as “The Arajet Effect,” highlights the airline’s role in expanding the regional air travel market. According to the presented data, approximately 1.3 million passengers traveled between the Dominican Republic and Latin America in 2022. This number is expected to rise to nearly 2.8 million by the end of 2025, with projections suggesting it will exceed 3.2 million by the end of 2026.
Manuel Luna, the Chief Communication Officer for Arajet, attributed this trend to increased competition and enhanced flight capacities. He stated that the airline’s entry into the market has not only improved fare competitiveness but has also facilitated market growth. This development is expected to lead to more jobs, increased tourism, and better business opportunities.
Specific markets have shown remarkable growth, with Colombia seeing an increase from 729,000 passengers in 2022 to a projected 1.3 million in 2026. Passenger traffic to Argentina is also expected to rise sharply, from approximately 71,000 in 2022 to over 425,000 in 2026. Peru is anticipated to see similar growth, from 221,000 passengers in 2022 to over 563,000 this year.
Arajet has reported a 58% increase in passenger traffic over the past year, indicating an upward trajectory in its operational capacity. The airline plans to maintain this trend with an accelerated expansion plan, projecting to facilitate over 3 million passengers and operate a fleet of 25 aircraft by 2027.
According to Víctor Pacheco, founder and CEO of Arajet, the company aims to transform the Dominican Republic into a key aviation hub in the Americas. The airline’s future growth strategy encompasses establishing a network of more than 35 destinations in over 20 countries, enhancing connectivity from its main bases in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.
As part of its operational advancements, Arajet has emphasized its contributions to local employment, generating over 1,000 direct jobs and approximately 2,100 indirect jobs, including a notable increase in the number of Dominican flight attendants and pilots. The airline has also become the first Dominican airline to join the International Air Transport Association (IATA), marking a significant institutional achievement.
Moving forward, Arajet plans to amplify its network and further develop the Dominican Republic’s standing as a prominent air transport center in the region.
Why It Matters
The growth of passenger traffic through Arajet not only boosts the airline’s profile but also contributes to the Dominican Republic’s economic development within the tourism and aviation sectors. The expansion promises to enhance regional connectivity and create new opportunities for the local workforce.
