Launch of Entrepreneurial Support Project in Haiti
The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MCI) launched the Support Project for Entrepreneurial Innovation and University Startups (AIESU) on October 9, 2026, at Quisqueya University. This initiative is designed to foster the development of innovative companies, contributing to job creation and economic growth in Haiti.
In his opening remarks, Minister of Trade and Industry, Monazard, emphasized the government’s role in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. He stated, “The State, on its own, cannot do everything, but it has the duty to show the way, to create the conditions and to bring together the actors.” He further asserted that a thriving Haiti could emerge from innovation and production, which would in turn boost trade and employment.
Minister Monazard encouraged collaboration between industrial companies and academic institutions. He called on businesses to present their challenges to students and researchers, fostering a connection between the academic sector and practical economic needs. This aims to position innovation as a key driver for Haiti’s development.
Monazard also highlighted new infrastructure efforts, such as an incubator established at Quisqueya University and another set to open soon in Les Cayes. He expressed plans for additional incubators across Haiti to support entrepreneurship in each of the country’s ten geographic departments.
Roberto Augustin, who represented the MCI’s Director General, stressed the importance of creating a supportive environment for young businesses. He noted that having a good idea is not sufficient; entrepreneurs require tailored support and skill development to transform their ambitions into reality.
Freud Miguel Renaty, the National Coordinator of AIESU, described the event as a pivotal transition from the planning phase to operational implementation. He articulated the need for universities to serve as incubators for business creation and innovation, declaring, “A country does not develop only by its capacity to produce, but also by its capacity to create and innovate.”
Jacky Lumarque, the Rector of Quisqueya University, welcomed the initiative and expressed optimism that it would enhance the entrepreneurial skills of young people, enabling them to pursue their ambitions and contribute to national development.
As part of AIESU, 20 projects were selected to join the first cohort of beneficiaries in a recent pitch competition, intended to support their development and execution.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry aims to strengthen relations between academic institutions and the productive sector, support the growth of innovative businesses, and empower Haitian youth to convert their ideas into economic activities that foster sustainable job creation.
