Matildas coach Joe Montemurro indicated he plans to experiment with new formations in the upcoming match against Haiti, suggesting that some key players could be rested due to fatigue. He remarked that it would be “an injustice” not to test these strategies as the team prepares for the World Cup.
Australia recently faced Germany, ranked third in the world, suffering a 4-2 loss that Montemurro described as a “reality check.” Former Socceroos captain Craig Foster criticized the team’s slow start during that match.
The Matildas will assess captain Sam Kerr’s condition after she appeared to injure her ankle while on the field against Germany. Montemurro stated that Kerr is “fine” but emphasized the importance of fatigue management for her and other players who have had heavy club commitments. He noted that Kerr transitioned directly from her time at Chelsea to her role at Gotham FC without an off-season.
“We will look at Sam over the next 24 hours, not so much because of the small knock she copped on her foot but more so managing her fatigue,” Montemurro said. He acknowledged that several players have started the season intensely and highlighted that the team was in good spirits leading up to the Haiti match.
Montemurro also expressed the necessity of trying out different ideas and formations, particularly given the significance of the upcoming World Cup. He mentioned that teams like Haiti should not be underestimated despite a recent 5-1 loss to Japan.
“It’s about facing different styles of football,” Montemurro stated, referencing the diverse opponents the Matildas have faced during international windows. He noted that engaging with various playing styles is crucial as they refine their strategy ahead of the World Cup.
As the team prepares to meet Haiti, Montemurro looks forward to the opportunity to conduct further evaluations. He acknowledged the uniqueness of the match and the need to glean insights from all competition, regardless of the opponents’ rankings. “Germany was a perfect test for us, and Haiti will give us another, different test,” he said.
Additionally, Montemurro is considering potential changes within his coaching staff, having conversed with former Matildas who have transitioned to coaching. While no decisions have been finalized regarding their involvement, he expressed an interest in integrating mentorship roles as the team gears up for the World Cup. The Matildas are set to face Haiti at 6 a.m. AEDT on Wednesday.
