The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global invitation for organizations and institutions to join its new initiative, Together for Science and Health. This movement aims to enhance the link between science, health, and society while fostering trust in evidence-based decision-making.
Scientific advancements have significantly impacted public health, transforming conditions once deemed life-threatening. Antibiotics have made deadly bacterial infections treatable, while improvements in vaccination, nutrition, sanitation, and medical care have enabled millions of children to survive and thrive. Antiretroviral treatments have allowed many individuals living with HIV to enjoy longer, healthier lives, and advances in cancer screening and treatment have improved early detection and outcomes.
Despite these successes, the WHO emphasizes that progress in health should never be taken for granted. Trust in scientific evidence is crucial for individuals to understand its relevance, contribute to scientific inquiries, and access its benefits. The organization notes that the collective efforts of researchers, health professionals, policymakers, and communities are necessary to translate scientific knowledge into better health outcomes.
Dr. Sylvie Briand, WHO Chief Scientist and Assistant Director-General for Better Health Systems, Access and Data a.i., highlighted the importance of making a difference in people’s lives through science. “Science is not just about making discoveries. It is about making a difference in people’s lives and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to benefit,” she said.
Call for Affiliation
The WHO invites like-minded organizations and institutions to affiliate with Together for Science and Health. Interested entities are encouraged to endorse the Declaration of Commitment and complete the affiliation form. By doing so, organizations can support the movement’s core principles and indicate their potential contributions to its three main pillars.
These pillars focus on strengthening relationships between science and society, supporting evidence-based health policy-making, and enhancing science communication. By participating, organizations can leverage their networks, expertise, and practical solutions to build trust in science and improve health outcomes.
The official launch of the Together for Science and Health movement is scheduled for November 10, 2026. This initiative marks a new phase of collaborative action aimed at utilizing science as a powerful tool for health, equity, and public welfare.
