MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. — Fifth-grade girls from Marshall County Schools participated in a STEM day on Tuesday, engaging in activities designed to generate interest in science, technology, engineering, and math before they progress to middle and high school.
During the event, students rotated through various interactive stations that included a pumpkin drop, VEX robotics challenges, and drone demonstrations.
This initiative, which started five years ago in connection with International Day of the Girl, aims to address the gender gap in STEM fields by encouraging young girls to explore these subjects.
“We just want to get them excited about the field, see what they can do as they get ready to go to middle school and high school, what is offered, and hopefully ignite that excitement and become interested in science,” said Heather McCord, coordinator of Career and Technical Education for Marshall County Schools.
The event is anticipated to return around the same time next year, continuing its mission to inspire young girls in the STEM disciplines.
