The Matildas secured a decisive 7-1 victory against Haiti in an international friendly match held in Chambly, France, on Wednesday. The win follows a 4-2 loss to Germany, helping Australia rebound as they prepare for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Midfielder Leticia McKenna was instrumental in the match, scoring two goals that bolstered her chances for selection in the World Cup squad. In just 80 seconds into the game, McKenna opened the scoring with a one-touch strike into the roof of the net. Despite McKenna’s early goal, Haiti equalized shortly after as midfielder Melchie Dumornay found the bottom corner of the net.
McKenna regained the lead for Australia just before halftime, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box. The Matildas expanded their lead in the second half, with an own goal by Haiti defender Kethna Louis and additional scores from Caitlin Foord, Daniela Galic, Clare Wheeler, and Holly McNamara.
Coach Joe Montemurro emphasized the need for further development as the team builds their roster. “We need time… It’s probably more about selecting the squad because now we’re starting to build a big roster of players,” Montemurro said. He expressed confidence in McKenna’s progress, noting that she has now scored three goals in four appearances for the national team.
Questions surrounding the fitness of captain Sam Kerr were addressed as she played a significant role in two of the goals despite concerns about ankle soreness from the previous match against Germany. Kerr, along with Foord, proved effective in the attack, showcasing their synergy throughout the game. The victory helped the Matildas maintain their world ranking of No. 15, providing a favorable draw position for the World Cup.
Australia’s midfield displayed a commanding performance, with Alana Murphy assisting Galic’s goal, while Wheeler contributed both a goal and an assist. “I was a spectator in 2023, and I loved watching the group,” McKenna remarked, expressing her eagerness to contribute to the team’s success in the World Cup.
The Matildas will continue their preparations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup as they analyze their performances and make final selections for the team roster.
