The Cleveland Guardians faced elimination in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) after losing to the Tampa Bay Rays in six games. Despite a strong showing from their pitching staff, the team struggled offensively, raising questions about their ability to contend for a World Series title in the near future.
Starter Gavin Williams and closer Cade Smith have been standout performers for the Guardians, contributing to one of the best pitching staffs in Major League Baseball. However, the team has faced challenges in producing runs, especially when they do not manufacture offense effectively.
According to Zachary Rotman from FanSided, the Guardians’ most pressing need heading into the offseason is to significantly enhance their power hitting. He noted that the club ranked 24th in the majors in runs scored, 27th in home runs, and 26th in on-base plus slugging (OPS) during the regular season.
Rotman pointed out that while seven players hit 12 or more home runs, none surpassed 18, with Angel Martinez leading the team with his 18 homers yet starting just one game in the ALCS.
“That just isn’t good enough,” Rotman stated, asserting that without improvements to their lineup, the Guardians may struggle to win another division title, especially given the current weaknesses in the AL Central.
The performance of Jose Ramirez, who had an uncharacteristically down season, is also a concern for the Guardians. How long he can remain the critical factor in the offense is under scrutiny as the team prepares for the upcoming off-season.
Looking ahead, the Guardians’ front office is encouraged to seek out power hitters while hoping to see contributions from young prospects like Chase DeLauter and Petey Halpin, who are expected to add more than 20 home runs in the future.
