From January to August 2026, U.S. pork exports to the Dominican Republic increased by 23% in volume and 22% in value, totaling $212.3 million. During the same period, U.S. beef exports grew by 19% in volume and 37% in value, reaching $121.8 million, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF).
As the top tourist destination in the Caribbean and the seventh-largest export market for U.S. red meat, the Dominican Republic presents significant growth opportunities for U.S. beef and pork. Lucia Ruano, USMEF’s representative for Central America and the Dominican Republic, highlighted the unique blend of sustainability in local food culture and a vibrant tourism-driven hospitality sector as key factors for potential expansion.
For pork, Ruano identified a strong foundation due to its deep roots in Dominican cuisine, suggesting that there is considerable market potential in retail consumption and foodservice applications. She noted that recent hotel assessments revealed opportunities to diversify breakfast menu offerings, optimize high-volume buffet solutions, and introduce unique pork dishes in specialty restaurants.
“In recent hotel assessments, we identified potential for greater variety in breakfast offerings, efficient applications for high-volume buffets, and differentiated pork dishes in specialty restaurants,” Ruano said.
In regards to U.S. beef, premium hotels, specialty restaurants, and high-end retail are seen as promising markets. Ruano explained that discussions in the foodservice sector revealed varied buyer needs, with some focusing on premium dining experiences while others prioritize consistent quality within specific cost parameters.
“This environment creates opportunities for Choice and Prime beef, and especially alternative cuts that deliver an attractive eating experience at a workable cost,” she stated.
With ongoing trends and opportunities for growth, U.S. exporters are poised to further capitalize on the Dominican Republic’s evolving culinary landscape.
