Andrew Novak secured his first individual PGA Tour title at the Mexico Open with a final round of two-under 69, finishing five shots clear of the competition. This victory marks a significant achievement for Novak, who had built a substantial lead earlier in the tournament with rounds of 61 and 62.
Despite a setback on the 10th hole, where he made a bogey that cut his lead to three strokes over Steven Fisk and Kristoffer Ventura, Novak responded strongly. He made three consecutive birdies, starting with a greenside bunker shot to four feet on the par-5 12th hole, followed by a drive to the green on the 13th that set up another birdie. He capped off his decisive run with an impressive 45-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole.
“That kind of really settled everything,” Novak said, expressing contentment with his performance. “I thought I grinded it out pretty well.”
Fisk and Ventura both finished strong with scores of 63. Ventura’s runner-up finish was particularly notable as it moved him from 108th to 76th in the FedEx Cup standings, securing his card for the next season. Mackenzie Hughes of Canada shot a 66, finishing tied for fourth with Ben Griffin, who posted a 67. Hughes noted that the results provided him with momentum as he seeks to improve his standings with three tournaments remaining this season.
“Gives me a bit of momentum for the last three,” Hughes stated. “Obviously, I still know I need more points and I need to keep climbing, but today was a big step in the right direction.”
Novak’s victory is a notable moment in his golfing career, particularly following a challenging season. He reflected on his previous successes, saying, “I loved Zurich and everything about that tournament. But it is nice to have one by myself, too. This is one I’ve been working for for a while.”
The outcome solidified Novak’s position in the FedEx Cup rankings, moving him from 89th to 53rd, which will enhance his entry into upcoming prestigious events. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Kihei Akina from Brigham Young University closed out the tournament with a remarkable round of 59, finishing in 15th place.
