Santo Domingo. The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM) announced an increase of RD$4 per gallon for both premium gasoline and optimal diesel. This adjustment is part of the government’s strategy to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on public transportation fares and the cost of basic food items.
To support consumers, the government will continue to subsidize fuels heavily. The subsidy amounts include RD$65.11 per gallon for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), RD$15.45 for regular gasoline, and RD$94.53 for regular diesel. The Ministry highlighted that diesel continues to exert considerable pressure on national finances, with the state bearing a cost of RD$94.53 per gallon for regular diesel and RD$82.82 for premium diesel.
According to the MICM, the increases apply because international crude oil prices do not correlate directly with the costs of fuel imports. More than 80% of fuels consumed in the Dominican Republic are imported as finished products. Consequently, refining expenses have caused prices for gasoline, diesel, and LPG to rise more rapidly than crude oil prices.
The new prices are expected to take effect shortly, as the government continues to navigate the complexities of fluctuating global oil markets while attempting to shield consumers from the full burden of these costs.
