FIFA’s leadership is facing significant internal opposition regarding a proposed plan to sell stakes in future World Cup profits. The initiative, led by President Gianni Infantino, has drawn scrutiny from key officials within the organization, culminating in a statement from FIFA’s chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, who claimed staff had been misled about the details of the project.

Internal Backlash Against World Cup Stake Sale

Lamour indicated that the staff deserved better transparency from Infantino, characterizing the proposal as a project driven solely by the president. He urged that the plan should not move forward and called for accountability from football leaders. His remarks were made following the resignation of Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino’s senior adviser, who publicly opposed the sale and encouraged others within FIFA to express their concerns.

Cordeiro, a former president of the U.S. Soccer Federation, emphasized his misunderstanding of the proposal and reiterated his lack of involvement in the decision-making process. He labeled the potential $20 billion commercial subsidiary, which would allocate 20% ownership to private equity investors, as detrimental to the integrity of football.

According to Cordeiro, FIFA already possesses adequate financial resources, having generated $15 billion over the past four years related to the men’s World Cup. He argued that seeking to raise $4.2 billion through partial asset sales is unnecessary and poses a risk to the future of the sport. He mentioned the organization’s current financial stability, highlighting its substantial reserves and absence of debt as reasons against the proposal.

Despite the mounting pressure, Lamour affirmed his dedication to his colleagues but accepted the possibility of losing his job as a consequence of his stance. He emphasized a commitment to the ethics of football and the values held by dedicated staff members. Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, remains poised for re-election in March.

The debate around Infantino’s plan comes at a time of heightened scrutiny facing FIFA, with various European nations reportedly considering a boycott of World Cup events in response to the proposal. The American soccer body has also expressed opposition.

Why It Matters

The controversy over FIFA’s sale of World Cup stakes raises fundamental questions about the governance of football and the balance between financial gain and the sport’s integrity. How FIFA navigates this internal dissent could significantly influence its reputation and operations moving forward.
