Two individuals have died in Michigan due to complications associated with cyclosporiasis, as reported by the state’s Department of Health and Human Services. This marks the first fatalities linked to the outbreak, which has been ongoing since May.

Details of the Outbreak

The health department indicated that both deceased had “significant underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration.” Specific details about the individuals have not been disclosed.

Cyclosporiasis is typically characterized by symptoms such as watery diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that most people with a healthy immune system generally recover without medical intervention, although the illness can take time to resolve.

Dr. Cynthia Sears, an expert in foodborne illnesses, points out that those with weakened immune systems face a higher risk for prolonged and severe effects. The parasite Cyclospora, responsible for the illness, comes from food or water contaminated with human waste.

Michigan and several other states have linked contaminated iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms in central Mexico to this outbreak, which led to a recall on July 17. As of July 30, Michigan has reported 11,234 cases of cyclosporiasis, although the actual number may be higher, as many individuals with mild symptoms do not seek testing.

The outbreak has resulted in 193 hospitalizations in Michigan, with the majority of affected individuals being elderly and suffering from existing health issues like heart and lung disease, cancer, and liver problems. Despite the alarming number of cases, Dr. Anurag Malani, an infectious disease specialist, reassures that “the large, overwhelming majority of people that have cyclospora have done well” and recovered.

Health officials are noticing a significant decrease in positive tests for cyclosporiasis compared to previous weeks. In July, the CDC reported 6,707 confirmed cases nationwide, which is lower than state reports due to delays in compiling data. The current outbreak is described as the largest recorded in the United States.

To mitigate the risk of infection, health officials recommend adhering to standard food safety practices, including cooking fruits and vegetables to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit.

Why It Matters: This outbreak underscores the importance of food safety and vigilance in handling produce, particularly as health officials work to investigate and manage an unprecedented number of cases across multiple states.
