The Reuters Climate Monitor provides real-time insights into temperature anomalies around the world by comparing current conditions to historical averages. This tool evaluates temperature variations across the globe, helping to clarify how today’s highs or lows diverge from what has been typically recorded.

Understanding Temperature Monitoring

The monitoring process begins with establishing what is considered normal. To achieve this, the Reuters Climate Monitor utilizes the ERA5 reanalysis dataset, published by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Through this dataset, typical temperatures for approximately one million grid squares that encompass the Earth’s surface are calculated for each day of the year.

Climate specialists designate the established baseline average as the “normal temperature.” The historical reference is based on a 30-year period from 1961 to 1990, a standard reference timeframe employed by climate scientists. A 31-day rolling window is used for calculating each day’s reference temperatures to minimize data fluctuations.

The ERA5 dataset operates with a lag of about five days from real-time data. To align current conditions for comparison, the latest ECMWF medium-range control forecast—previously known as HRES—is applied to the same global grid. Though these two datasets may yield slightly different data due to their use of distinct modeling methods, a statistical correction is utilized to ensure they are comparable.

Following alignment, the historical norms are compared to present forecasts for each grid square, revealing today’s temperature anomaly. This report maps how current high temperatures deviate from the historical standard for the specific date. Highs are evaluated according to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which may cross into different calendar days in local contexts.

To aggregate data for larger geographical areas, such as continents and countries, all relevant grid squares are averaged according to region. For the U.S., data is organized into nine climate regions determined by the National Centers for Environmental Information. Similarly, European data is categorized by NUTS-1 statistical regions created by the European Union.

The methodology behind the Reuters Climate Monitor benefits from extensive collaboration with climate experts, including scientists from CSIRO and various universities. Their guidance and insights have shaped the final product, ensuring its reliability and accuracy.

Why It Matters

The Reuters Climate Monitor serves as a crucial tool for understanding temperature trends and anomalies, which are essential for climate research and public awareness. By providing real-time data and comparisons to historical norms, this resource can help inform policymakers, scientists, and the general public about ongoing climate changes and their implications.
