During a crisis meeting held in Rabat, Morocco, FIFA officials expressed their support for President Gianni Infantino following significant backlash over a proposed plan to sell shares in World Cup profits. FIFA acknowledged errors in the handling of this plan and committed to preventing similar mistakes in the future.

FIFA Officials Reaffirm Support

The meeting, held on August 5, 2026, included FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafström and management board members, who all vocalized their backing for Infantino. In a public statement, FIFA admitted to shortcomings in the execution of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative, which focused on creating a commercial subsidiary to handle World Cup profits. The governing body stated that the process “should have been handled differently.”

Additionally, FIFA sent a letter of apology to the FIFA Council and its member associations, promising that such errors will not reoccur. Infantino reiterated his confidence in Grafström, despite the secretary-general having previously criticized the handling of the situation.

The FFE proposal, which has now been withdrawn, was positioned by European soccer leagues as “dangerous,” highlighting broader governance issues within FIFA. These leagues emphasized the necessity for reform to ensure stakeholders are involved in critical decision-making that impacts the future of soccer.

Concerns regarding leadership at FIFA have intensified, with figures such as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressing a loss of faith in Infantino’s presidency. Carney described Infantino’s lack of consultation with advisors as a “fatal” governance failure. This sentiment is echoed by UEFA, which has threatened to boycott future World Cups if FIFA does not prioritize football over commercial interests.

Calls for Infantino’s resignation have also surfaced, notably from former soccer star Luis Figo, who criticized the current presidency as degrading to the office. Amidst the internal strife, various FIFA officials, including Arsène Wenger and Carlos Cordeiro, have distanced themselves from Infantino’s recent proposals, indicating a potential division within the organization.

As Infantino prepares to seek a fourth term in office during the March elections, the events of the past week have raised critical questions about his leadership and the overall governance of FIFA.

Why It Matters

The ongoing controversy surrounding Infantino and the governance of FIFA is crucial not only for soccer’s future but also for the integrity of sports management worldwide. Calls for reform and accountability reflect a growing concern about the balance between commercial interests and the sport’s core values.
