Gianni Infantino continues his tenure as FIFA president following a significant show of support from the organization’s management board. This comes after he faced backlash over a failed initiative to sell stakes in FIFA’s business. Infantino convened the board in Rabat, Morocco, where FIFA recently opened a new office.

Morocco, co-host of the upcoming 2030 men’s World Cup, has been a supportive environment for Infantino amid recent controversies. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation was among the first to back him after his plans were abruptly abandoned.

Backing Amid Mixed Attendance

While several key members of the management board attended the meeting in Rabat, notable absences included Arsene Wenger and Jill Ellis. Kevin Lamour, who had criticized Infantino for his previous actions, was also missing. Despite this, those present expressed strong support for Infantino, with a statement reaffirming their confidence in his leadership.

Infantino’s support even extends to FIFA General Secretary Mattias Grafstrom, who previously condemned the controversial initiative. His subsequent endorsement during the meeting has raised questions about his motives and relationship with Infantino, especially given a prior memo in which Grafstrom indicated potential concerns about Infantino’s leadership style.

In a letter co-signed by both Infantino and Grafstrom to FIFA’s 211 member associations, they acknowledged mistakes and pledged to improve communication and processes going forward. This letter also emphasized FIFA’s commitment to protecting its integrity and governance.

Infantino’s leadership has not been without criticism, particularly from UEFA, which has asserted a loss of confidence in him. Some European nations have publicly retracted their endorsement of Infantino’s re-election, with discussions ongoing among various federations about their positions.

Former FIFA presidential candidate Prince Ali bin Al Hussein criticized FIFA’s management practices, accusing them of pressuring member organizations to support Infantino. He voiced concerns over insufficient support provided to the Jordan Football Association during the World Cup.

In addition, Infantino has faced scrutiny regarding outstanding financial obligations to clubs and accusations aimed at his plans, suggesting dishonesty and a lack of transparency. Political figures, including UK and Canadian leaders, have publicly expressed their lack of confidence in his leadership.

Despite the current adversities, Infantino has shared messages of support from various federations via social media, highlighting an ongoing division among FIFA’s member associations regarding his presidency.

Why It Matters: Infantino’s persistent leadership and the mixed reactions within FIFA illustrate a deeper struggle for power and trust within the organization. As discussions about governance continue, the responses from European federations and other member associations could significantly impact FIFA’s future direction and stability as it prepares for upcoming elections.
