Visa Inc. is enhancing its footprint in Southeast Asia’s travel market by entering a partnership with Klook, an online travel agency and booking platform. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding that spans six countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. This collaboration merges Klook’s travel experience offerings with Visa’s extensive payment network.
As part of the initiative, Visa and Klook will engage in joint creator programs, cardholder promotions, and enhance brand visibility at travel destinations. Furthermore, Klook will be integrated into Visa Destinations, allowing Visa cardholders to access unique travel experiences and related offers throughout the region. This partnership aims to broaden Visa’s role in travel services beyond mere payment processing, connecting customers with travel ideas and experiences via Klook.
This strategic move aligns with recent trends indicating a shift in traveler preferences towards experience-focused planning. A study from Visa highlighted that 37% of respondents from the Asia-Pacific region prioritize unique local experiences when scheduling trips. This is notably higher than the global average of 29%. Additionally, Klook’s data indicates that over half of travelers from Asia Pacific begin their planning without a predetermined destination, with a portion choosing specific activities as the starting point.
In its third quarter of fiscal 2026, Visa recorded a 12% year-over-year increase in cross-border transaction volume, excluding intra-Europe transactions, while travel-related cross-border transactions rose by 10%. Klook’s Kreator Program, featuring over 30,000 content creators across 88 markets, provides Visa with additional channels to engage consumers before and during their travels. This engagement has the potential to translate into increased bookings and spending, further boosting Visa’s network of cardholders and merchant partners in Southeast Asia.
Competitive Landscape
Within the payments industry, Visa faces competition from companies such as Mastercard Incorporated and American Express Company. Mastercard has also entered into a partnership with Klook to bolster its presence in experience-driven travel, offering cardholder discounts and exploring new payment solutions. This partnership aims to enhance customer engagement and capitalize on traveler spending.
In contrast, American Express is focusing on a premium travel strategy in Southeast Asia, providing benefits through American Express Travel, Fine Hotels + Resorts, and other travel-related services to strengthen cardholder loyalty and spending in flights and accommodations.
Why It Matters
The partnership between Visa and Klook signifies a strategic shift in the payments sector, particularly within the burgeoning experience-led travel market in Southeast Asia. As consumer preferences evolve, this collaboration could play a vital role in shaping how both companies engage with travelers, potentially leading to increased revenue streams and stronger market positions for Visa and Klook.
