TAIPEI, September 9 — Raymond Greene, the de facto U.S. ambassador to Taiwan, warned that any conflict across the Taiwan Strait could significantly disrupt the global economy, suggesting that the consequences could surpass those experienced during World War II. Speaking at a defense forum in Taipei, Greene emphasized that preventing such a conflict must be a priority. He highlighted the upcoming U.S.-China summit as a critical opportunity for dialogue and strategic stability, aiming to avert miscalculations between the two powers.
Calls for Enhanced Defense and Diplomacy
Despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations due to Taiwan’s status as a territory claimed by China, the United States remains its most prominent international supporter and arms supplier. Greene pointed out that the U.S. government, particularly during the Trump administration, has prioritized maintaining peace in the Indo-Pacific region through vigorous diplomatic efforts.
During his address, Greene indicated that bolstering Taiwan’s defense capabilities is essential, given the heightened tensions with China. He referenced Taiwan’s commitment to modernizing its military and increasing defense spending, which is projected to exceed T$1 trillion for the first time next year. This military enhancement comes as Taiwan’s administration, led by President Lai Ching-te, seeks to address perceived threats from China.
At the same forum, Taiwan’s Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim stated that it is crucial for Taiwan to strengthen its defenses. She reiterated the island’s commitment to preserving peace and ensuring that its people can determine their future. Hsiao emphasized that a better-prepared society is necessary for facing a range of security challenges.
China’s government maintains that it prefers a peaceful resolution to the Taiwan issue but has not renounced the use of force as a potential option. Chinese officials have described the eventual reunification of Taiwan with China as an “unstoppable historical trend.”
As the world watches the upcoming U.S.-China summit, both nations face the challenge of navigating their complex relationship while addressing the evolving situation in Taiwan.
Why It Matters
The stakes surrounding Taiwan’s security are rising as the island increases its defense spending and military capabilities in response to China’s aggressive stance. The potential for conflict in the Taiwan Strait carries significant implications not only for regional stability but also for the global economy, making diplomatic conversations essential for maintaining peace.
