At the 81st United Nations General Assembly, the Dominican Republic is prioritizing issues related to Haiti, bilateral relations, trade, investment, and export promotion. Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó emphasized the urgency of addressing the renewal of international forces in Haiti, stressing that the stability of the neighboring nation is intrinsically tied to security and employment in the region.
Focus on Bilateral Relations and Economic Opportunities
Bisonó’s agenda includes a planned meeting with Russia’s foreign minister to discuss Haiti and other relevant topics. Recently, there have been discussions between the foreign ministers of the Dominican Republic and Haiti regarding a coordinated approach towards the renewal of the international mission in Haiti.
Highlighting the significance of the United States to the Dominican economy, Bisonó pointed to the critical roles of remittances, tourism, exports, and investments from the US. He noted that both nations are engaged in conversations concerning tariff-related matters to safeguard Dominican interests while enhancing conditions for local investments and exports.
Following the UN General Assembly, Bisonó is set to travel to Washington, D.C., to engage with representatives from the White House, State Department, and Department of Energy. These meetings are expected to focus on deepening economic ties between the two nations.
The foreign minister also announced that the Foreign Ministry aims to adopt a more proactive approach in promoting Dominican exports and attracting investments. Ambassadors and consuls will be encouraged to identify business opportunities and facilitate the promotion of Dominican products in international markets.
Additionally, Bisonó mentioned the development of dry ports along the border with Haiti as a measure to improve logistics and enhance trade between the two countries. These initiatives reflect the Dominican Republic’s commitment to strengthening its economic framework and bolstering relationships within the region.
