The ecosystem for startups in Egypt is rapidly evolving, marked by significant gatherings such as the RiseUp Summit in Cairo and the Techne Summit in Alexandria. These events are crucial in linking local startups with potential investors and attracting international interest in Egypt’s innovative talent and ideas.

Growth of Egypt’s Startup Ecosystem

According to Ethar Hegazy, CEO of the software project management platform Time, Egypt has emerged as an essential hub for entrepreneurship and startups on a global scale. She highlighted several successful Egyptian startups, including Swvl, a bus ride app; Capiter, a B2B e-commerce platform; Eventtus, an events startup; Elmenus, a restaurant service; and Yodawy, a pharmacy company. Additionally, the used-car retail startup Sylndr, based in Cairo, raised $12.6 million in a pre-seed funding round in May 2022, aiming to make significant changes in Egypt’s automotive market, which features over 6 million cars, the second largest in Africa.

Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation, described the country’s startup scene as “vibrant and developing.” She emphasized the strong demographic advantage, noting that approximately 60% of the population is under the age of 30. This youthful demographic has contributed to an ecosystem that successfully attracted international investment, with startups raising $1.2 billion from 2019 to May 2022, representing over 83% of the funding acquired in North Africa, according to a report by The Big Deal, a database focused on African investments.

The recent rise in funding and the success of various startups underscore Egypt’s potential as a leading digital center in the region. With continued support from both local and international communities, the country aims to strengthen its position in the global startup landscape.

Why It Matters

The growth of Egypt’s startup ecosystem not only stimulates economic development but also creates job opportunities for the nation’s youth. With investments pouring into the sector, Egypt is well on its way to becoming a key player in the global startup arena, which can lead to enhanced technological innovations and greater regional influence.
