The Atlanta Falcons have officially named Tua Tagovailoa their starting quarterback, concluding a lengthy competition for the position as the team prepares for its season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Tagovailoa, 28, will make his 77th regular-season start in this matchup.
Tagovailoa joined the Falcons on a one-year contract worth $1.2 million this offseason after spending six seasons with the Miami Dolphins. In 2023, he was named to the Pro Bowl, but he was released two seasons later despite a substantial dead cap hit of nearly $100 million for the Dolphins.
Quarterback Competition and Team Dynamics
Tagovailoa secured the starting role over Michael Penix Jr., the Falcons’ No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, Penix, who is still recovering from a torn ACL sustained last season, is viewed as a potential challenger as the season progresses. He was cleared for 11-on-11 practice on August 24 and will not participate in Week 1.
Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski expressed pride in both quarterbacks, noting their hard work and mutual support during the offseason. “We’ll support him [Tagovailoa] and make sure this is a collective group that is constantly looking to help each other,” Stefanski stated.
While Tagovailoa missed the first week of training camp due to back spasms and struggled at times during practice, coaches have maintained a positive outlook on his development. Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees highlighted Tagovailoa’s commitment to the operational aspects of the offense, emphasizing that he is taking on responsibilities that are new to him.
Despite questions about his arm strength compared to Penix, Tagovailoa boasts an impressive 68 percent career completion rate, which positions him as a reliable option for executing the game plan. Rees commented, “When things are clean, he’s as accurate as they get.”
The Falcons face a strategic decision regarding Penix, who is midway through his rookie contract. The team has yet to determine whether to exercise his fifth-year option for the 2028 season. Stefanski remarked on Penix’s progress, stating, “This will continue to be something where we work together with Mike. We are all on the same page.”
In Week 1, Cooper Rush will serve as Tagovailoa’s backup. As the season unfolds, Atlanta’s coaching staff will evaluate the team’s quarterback depth and performance on an ongoing basis.
Why It Matters
Tagovailoa’s appointment as the starting quarterback marks a significant moment for the Falcons as they strive for success this season. The decision has implications for team dynamics, offensive strategies, and the development of both Tagovailoa and Penix as the franchise assesses its future at the quarterback position.
