The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to face off against the New York Islanders tonight at Scotiabank Arena, with goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky expected to start. Bobrovsky’s performance comes on the heels of a challenging loss to the Buffalo Sabres, where the Leafs were unable to maintain a lead.
Bobrovsky, who earned his first win with the team last Saturday, was unable to secure a victory in his first home game. Nevertheless, head coach Jim Hiller has decided to continue with Bobrovsky in goal, despite criticism following the loss to Buffalo.
During the Maple Leafs’ morning skate, Hiller confirmed that Bobrovsky would take the net for tonight’s matchup. Previously, Anthony Stolarz started when the Leafs played the Islanders on September 30. Bobrovsky’s recent record stands at 1-2-2, which some analysts attribute more to team dynamics rather than his individual performance.
According to David Alter of The Hockey News, Bobrovsky was observed in the home net during the morning skates, indicating he is the projected starter against the Islanders. “Morning skate is about to get underway. Sergei Bobrovsky is in the home net and is the projected starter against the Islanders tonight,” Alter noted on social media.
Despite his record, Bobrovsky has shown resilience in goal, frequently facing high volumes of shots. In his last three games, he faced 34 shots against the Sabres, 33 against the Colorado Avalanche, and 43 against the Vegas Golden Knights. The Maple Leafs hope to improve their defensive play and better support their goaltender moving forward.
As the team looks to break their current trend of losing, securing a win against the Islanders would be crucial for regaining momentum. The matchup is an important opportunity for the Leafs to improve their season record and provide a boost to team morale.
