Nicaraguan authorities have announced the closure of their Embassy in the Dominican Republic amid escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations. This decision follows a period of increased friction, particularly after the Dominican government recalled its ambassador to Nicaragua for consultations due to the suspension of elections announced by Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega.
Diplomatic Relations Strained
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic confirmed the embassy’s closure in an official statement. It noted that the government took note of Nicaragua’s decision to shut its diplomatic mission in Santo Domingo. Formerly, on July 23, the Dominican government, led by President Luis Abinader, had decided to recall its ambassador, Acsamary Guzmán Nina, for consultations in light of the political situation in Nicaragua.
In its statement, the Dominican Foreign Ministry clarified that the embassy operations would remain under the authority of a chargé d’affaires ad interim. It also emphasized that the Dominican Republic will continue to oversee bilateral relations through established diplomatic channels despite the current circumstances.
The diplomatic tensions escalated following Ortega’s declaration in mid-July that no new elections would be held in Nicaragua. Ortega, who has been in power since 2007, attributed this decision to the alleged aims of the opposition, whom he accused of attempting to exploit state resources for personal gain. Furthermore, he announced plans to promote legislation aimed at consolidating his power.
President Ortega, now 80 years old, is a significant figure in Nicaraguan politics, having led the country in various capacities since the fall of the Somoza dictatorship in 1979. Alongside him, Rosario Murillo has served as co-president since her re-election, having previously held the Vice Presidency until 2025.
These developments underscore a critical moment in Nicaraguan-Dominican relations, reflecting a broader pattern of political instability in Central America.
Why It Matters
The closure of Nicaragua’s embassy highlights ongoing tensions and the challenges facing diplomatic relations in the region. As both nations navigate this crisis, the implications for bilateral cooperation and international engagement may be significant, particularly in areas such as trade and security. The situation also raises concerns regarding the state of democracy and governance in Nicaragua under Ortega’s administration.
