CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A SpaceX rocket that launched two lunar landers collided with the moon as expected on Wednesday, following a year of erratic drifting, scientists have confirmed. The incident has been termed a significant contribution to the growing issue of lunar debris.
Collision Confirmed by Astronomers
While the actual impact was not visually confirmed at the time, a telescope in Chile successfully detected a debris plume resulting from the crash. Experts in space tracking indicated that the rocket’s trajectory made the collision with the moon unavoidable. The rocket segment impacted the lunar surface at approximately 5,400 mph (8,700 kph).
This latest incident adds to concerns over lunar litter, with incidents of rocket debris crashing into the moon increasing as more nations pursue lunar exploration. A similar event occurred last year when a Chinese rocket unintentionally impacted the moon, and experts believe there have been numerous unreported incidents over the years.
Julianna Scheiman from SpaceX noted that the company collaborates with NASA to mitigate the risk of future incidents, emphasizing that this particular crash was unintentional. She explained that solar activity and gravitational forces led it onto a collision path with the moon.
Carl Schmidt from Boston University expressed confidence that his team’s findings indicated a successful observation of the collision. Using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, they identified a plume comprised of sodium and lithium that extended for tens of kilometers into space after the impact.
Prior to the event, former astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell reported that observations indicated the spent rocket stage was on a trajectory towards the moon. The anticipated impact location was identified as a barren area near Einstein Crater, which presents visibility challenges from Earth.
Despite efforts from various astronomers to observe the impact, many, including Dutch scientist Marco Langbroek, found the task difficult. Nonetheless, both he and McDowell maintained that the rocket met its end as anticipated. Visual confirmation will be sought via NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, with images expected to be available next week.
The upper stage of the Falcon rocket weighed four tons and was over 40 feet (12 meters) long. Launched from Cape Canaveral on January 15, 2025, it initially carried the Blue Ghost lander from Firefly Aerospace and the Resilience lander from ispace, with the latter reportedly failing upon arrival.
As lunar exploration intensifies, NASA aims to lay a foundation for future human settlements on the moon. SpaceX and Blue Origin, founded by Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos respectively, are set to provide lunar landers for upcoming Artemis missions, including the anticipated docking rehearsal in orbit planned for next year. A potential lunar landing with astronauts could occur as soon as 2028.
