A contestant of the reality television show “Survivor Greece” has filed a $100 million lawsuit against the show’s producers after suffering severe injuries in a boating accident. The lawsuit, filed by 21-year-old Stavros Floros on September 3, stems from an incident that occurred on May 11 while he was spearfishing off Saona Island in the Dominican Republic during a break from filming.
Reports indicate that Floros sustained a partial amputation of his left leg and serious injuries to his right ankle when he was struck by a boat’s outboard engine propellers. Following the accident, AcunMedya, the production company behind “Survivor Greece,” acknowledged the occurrence of a “serious accident,” stating the need to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Details of the Incident and Lawsuit
According to AcunMedya, the incident transpired while Floros was spearfishing “outside the competitive process of the reality show,” with a tourist boat reportedly being responsible for the collision. The local authorities have initiated an investigation into the details of the incident.
A statement released via the official “Survivor Greece” Facebook page on May 12 confirmed that Floros was “out of danger” and had regained consciousness in an intensive care unit, with considerations for a potential transfer to a specialized medical facility in the United States.
In the lawsuit, Floros alleges negligence on the part of the producers, stating that the show’s structure necessitates contestants to perform activities in open waters that are heavily trafficked by tourist boats. He claims that this lack of safety measures—such as the absence of safety boats, spotters, and protected zones, despite previous incidents—contributed to the accident. He further expressed that a tourniquet was crucial in saving his life after the incident and described undergoing multiple surgeries during a 61-day hospitalization in Miami.
In light of the incident, SKAI Television, which broadcasts “Survivor Greece,” has decided to suspend airing the series.
Why It Matters
This lawsuit raises important questions regarding safety protocols for reality television productions, especially when participants engage in high-risk activities. The case may also have implications for how production companies manage the risks associated with their shows and the legal responsibilities they hold towards their contestants.
