Vietnamese telecommunications company Viettel is set to enter the Dominican Republic market after securing a total of 240 MHz of spectrum across three frequency bands: 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, and 3.6 GHz. This expansion marks Viettel’s entry into its 11th international market.
Spectrum Acquisition Details
The investment was confirmed following the results of a tender conducted by the Dominican Republic’s telecommunications regulator, INDOTEL. The awarded spectrum licenses are valid for a period of 20 years and will enable Viettel to deploy both 4G and 5G networks in the region.
INDOTEL sanctioned the spectrum awards under Resolution No. 073-2026 on August 19, 2026. Viettel is required to finalize a concession agreement within 90 days and is in the process of establishing a local entity in preparation for the launch of its services.
In addition to launching network services, Viettel has signaled its intention to invest in telecommunications infrastructure throughout the Dominican Republic, emphasizing the goal of enhancing coverage in underserved and remote areas. The company aims to develop a range of digital services for both consumers and businesses in the region.
Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and CEO of Viettel Group, expressed a commitment to a long-term approach in the Dominican Republic market, focusing on modern infrastructure and cutting-edge technology.
With this move, Viettel expands its reach beyond its existing ten international markets, which include countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The majority of these operations have been reported as holding the largest mobile subscriber bases in their respective territories.
In 2025, Viettel’s international operations generated approximately USD 3.34 billion in revenue, marking a 23.9% increase year-over-year and sustaining a trend of double-digit growth for the ninth consecutive year. The recent spectrum acquisition is expected to allow Viettel to leverage a combination of low- and mid-band frequencies, which can enhance both broadband coverage and mobile broadband services.
The entry into the Dominican market comes at a time when demand for high-speed connectivity and digital services is increasing, positioning Viettel to contribute its extensive telecommunications expertise to meet local needs.
Why It Matters: Viettel’s expansion into the Dominican Republic underscores the growing demand for enhanced telecommunications infrastructure in underserved regions, as well as the company’s commitment to international growth. This initiative could lead to improved digital connectivity for consumers and businesses in the area, fostering economic development.
