The 2027 NFL Draft is shaping up to feature a promising group of safety prospects, with evaluations indicating a deep talent pool. As teams begin their preparations, early analysis highlights several standout players who are making waves in the preseason rankings.

Top Safety Prospects for 2027 NFL Draft

KJ Bolden from Georgia leads the list, showcasing impressive speed, competitiveness, and football IQ. At 6 feet tall and weighing 190 pounds, Bolden has demonstrated his ability to make plays in coverage and excel as a tackler. His performance during the last two seasons has drawn the attention of scouts and teams alike. However, concerns remain regarding his weight, which ideally should increase to enhance his performance in run support.

Following Bolden is Tae Johnson from Notre Dame, who stands 6-2 and weighs 197 pounds. Renowned for his decisiveness and range, Johnson collected four interceptions last season and has shown promise as a playmaker. Yet, his tackling angles are an area for improvement, especially when maneuvering through crowded spaces. His continued development could position him as a first-round prospect.

Ohio State’s Jaylen McClain, standing at 5-11 and weighing 200 pounds, ranks third. Having transitioned from cornerback, McClain demonstrates smooth athleticism and effective coverage skills. Although his ball production has room for growth, his instincts have begun to translate into impactful plays. His development in 2026 is pivotal as he aims to solidify his position in the upcoming draft.

Texas’s Jelani McDonald, who is 6-2 and weighs 194 pounds, is recognized for his burst to the ball and effective coverage abilities. With the highest tackle efficiency among FBS safeties last season, his anticipation skills need refining to improve his defensive reads. His contributions to the Longhorns’ secondary have marked him as a key player to watch.

Rounding out the top five is Ty Benefield of LSU, measuring 6-2 and weighing 208 pounds. Benefield’s physical attributes and speed have garnered attention, but inconsistency in tackling techniques could hinder his potential. After a successful tenure at Boise State, where he was a standout player, his recent transfer to LSU has raised expectations for his draft stock.

Why It Matters

The evaluation of safety prospects for the 2027 NFL Draft is crucial for both college athletes and NFL teams. A strong safety presence can significantly impact game outcomes, and discovering versatile, high-performing players is a priority for NFL franchises. As the draft approaches, the scouting community will closely monitor these athletes’ performances and developments throughout the college football season.
