The Latino Employee Network at Thomson Reuters is an employee-driven business resource group focused on raising awareness of the diverse backgrounds within the organization. The network aims to grow, promote, and retain Latino employees, while also fostering their cultural and professional development.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month 2024
During Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates the contributions and culture of Hispanic and Latino Americans, the Latino Employee Network organized a variety of events. These festivities are particularly meaningful, coinciding with the independence days of several Latin American nations like Mexico, Costa Rica, and El Salvador. Activities included both virtual and in-person components to ensure widespread participation among employees.
The month kicked off with Thomson Reuters employees attending LiderCon 2024, a Latino leadership conference held in Minneapolis–Saint Paul. The conference brought together Latino professionals from various sectors, and the network hosted a booth at the Opportunity Expo, allowing attendees to learn more about its commitment to diversity and inclusion. This event was an opportunity for Hispanic leaders to connect and foster their leadership skills.
Additionally, the network hosted a “Spanish is My Superpower” kickoff party aimed at celebrating the significance of the Spanish language. The month continued with engaging activities, including a salsa dance class that helped employees connect through music and movement.
Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, weekly Spanish lessons were facilitated by Daniel, an Attorney Editor within the organization. These sessions allowed employees to enhance their language skills while exploring various aspects of Hispanic culture.
One significant highlight of the month was a fireside chat featuring Laura Clayton-McDonnell, President of Corporates, who shared insights drawn from her Panamanian heritage. Moderated by Gerardo Casahonda, VP of Indirect Tax, the discussion emphasized the values of familial support and community unity. Clayton-McDonnell also recommended the book “Growth Mindset” by Carol Dweck, encouraging continuous learning and development among employees.
The month also included virtual cultural exploration events. Employees were invited to learn more about Cuba’s rich history, traditions, and contributions alongside a session that showcased the vibrant heritage of the Dominican Republic, led by Ramses, a Senior Financial Analyst.
The Latino Employee Network is open to all employees, whether members of the Hispanic community or allies. It has established chapters in Ann Arbor, Dallas, and Minneapolis/St. Paul, serving as an important platform for growth and connection. The network encourages participation in efforts that promote diversity and cultural awareness and looks forward to continuing these traditions in future celebrations.
