Kenya, 4 September 2026 – Kenyan President William Ruto expressed gratitude on Friday to the police officers who participated in the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission for Haiti (MSS-Haiti Mission). The President highlighted their bravery and commitment to assisting vulnerable populations in Haiti, particularly children and women, who faced violence from gangs.
Recognition of Service and Sacrifice
During a ceremony where the officers returned the mission flag to Kenyan authorities, President Ruto stated that he had closely monitored the operations of the Kenyan police in Haiti, maintaining regular communication with their commander and Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja. He commended the officers for their commendable efforts and acknowledged the risks they undertook in their mission.
Additionally, the President presided over a passing-out parade for the Administration Police at the same location in Embakasi, Nairobi. He took a moment to honor the memory of Kenyan police officers who lost their lives during their service in Haiti by laying a wreath in their memory.
The MSS-Haiti Mission, endorsed by the United Nations Security Council, aimed to assist the Haitian National Police in combating armed gangs and restoring safety within the country. Recently, the mission underwent a rebranding and now operates as the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) under a new UN mandate.
In April 2026, Kenya’s security mission in Haiti was approaching its conclusion, with top officials meeting the last group of officers preparing for their return. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General Kanja visited the remaining Kenyan contingent, where they received updates on the operations and achievements as the drawdown commenced. Murkomen acknowledged the officers’ dedication to stabilizing Haiti, praising their unwavering commitment and sacrifices. He conveyed a goodwill message from President Ruto, assuring continued support for the officers.
Inspector General Kanja lauded the contingent for their professionalism and discipline throughout the operation, recognizing the challenges faced during their deployment.
As the MSS-Haiti mission transitions to the Gang Suppression Force, the contributions of the Kenyan police remain a critical component of ongoing efforts to restore peace in Haiti.
Why It Matters
This mission reflects Kenya’s commitment to international peacekeeping efforts and underlines the role of security forces in addressing gang violence and restoring order in crisis-affected regions. The successful return of the officers and their commendable performance may bolster further cooperation between Kenya and international partners in future missions.
