Chinese shipping giant COSCO has firmly denied allegations that its vessels were equipped with concealed technology to gather intelligence for the Chinese government. The company labeled the claims “totally unfounded” and “false.”
COSCO Responds to Allegations
On September 4, COSCO responded to reports that emerged citing two anonymous senior officials from the Trump administration. These reports alleged that COSCO utilized hidden equipment aboard its vessels to spy on military communications from countries including the United States.
According to the unnamed officials, COSCO reportedly has a longstanding partnership with Beijing that facilitates the collection of communication signals from vessels and aircraft operating in regions across Europe, North America, and Asia.
In its official statement, COSCO asserted its commitment to “market-oriented operations and compliance practices” in all its global businesses. The company emphasized that all communication, navigation, safety, and operational equipment on its vessels is used for legitimate commercial purposes, such as ensuring navigation safety, facilitating ship-to-shore communications, and responding to emergencies. COSCO categorically denied using any equipment on its ships to intercept military communications or gather intelligence.
The backdrop of these allegations coincides with the upcoming visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington on September 24, where he is expected to engage in discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump. The precise date of the visit has yet to be officially confirmed by Beijing, but the summit is anticipated to address various sensitive security and trade matters.
The Chinese embassy in Washington has previously issued statements asserting that Beijing does not compel companies or individuals to collect or provide data or intelligence abroad that contravenes local laws.
Why It Matters
The allegations against COSCO come amid heightened scrutiny of China’s global operations, especially concerning technology and security practices. The company’s robust denial seeks to mitigate concerns surrounding espionage and underline its commitment to legitimate business practices. As international relations evolve, particularly between China and the United States, the implications of such accusations could have significant ramifications for global trade and diplomatic interactions.
