ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque has deployed 40 speed cameras across the city, utilizing advanced radar technology and multiple cameras to accurately identify speeding vehicles, even on multi-lane roads. The system is designed to enhance traffic safety by issuing tickets to drivers who exceed the speed limit by as little as 11 miles per hour.
Todd Jackson, chief technology officer for Mesa Technologies, explained the mechanism behind the technology. Each speed camera incorporates three cameras and a multi-object radar system that allows for the precise localization of vehicles, providing X and Y positional data for each car monitored on the road.
“The camera is monitoring lanes all the time, not taking pictures, but only monitoring through the radar,” Jackson stated. When a vehicle is detected as speeding, a green box is generated around it, indicating which lane the violation occurred in. “They can see the cars in lane three, and they can see a box around it,” Jackson added, noting that the system correlates the vehicle’s identified position with a specific lane.
To gauge vehicle speed, the system employs radio waves that bounce off the cars. Jackson highlighted that the radar can track up to 256 vehicles simultaneously, continuously updating speed data until a citation is warranted. “The radar can track the car before the photo position,” he noted, ensuring that sustained speed violations are captured accurately.
Once a speeding incident is recorded, the details are sent to SiteWeb, the Elevate processing platform. This is where human reviewers assess the evidence against program requirements and business rules before progressing to approval by the Albuquerque Police Department. After verification, tickets are mailed to the violators. Notably, the data captured by the cameras is deleted after a few days, ensuring that personal information is not stored unless necessary to document a violation.
Jackson emphasized the privacy measures in place, stating, “Unless you’re above the threshold and the camera decides it needs to take a photo sequence to document you, your personal license plate vehicle and all that is not recorded by this.”
These speed cameras exemplify a blend of technology and law enforcement aimed at mitigating speeding and fostering safer driving conditions in Albuquerque.
Why It Matters
The implementation of speed cameras in Albuquerque underscores a growing trend in urban areas to utilize technology for traffic enforcement. By leveraging advanced monitoring systems, cities aim to not only reduce speed-related accidents but also enhance overall roadway safety for residents and visitors.
