Juneteenth Celebrations Scheduled Across Upstate South Carolina
Various events commemorating Juneteenth are set to take place in Greenville County and across the Upstate from June 18 to June 20. The celebrations will honor the historical significance of Juneteenth, which marks the day in 1865 when enslaved individuals in Texas first learned of their freedom, occurring over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and months after the Civil War concluded. Now recognized as a federal holiday, Juneteenth is celebrated nationwide with festivities, cultural activities, and community gatherings.
One significant event is Greenville’s fifth annual Juneteenth celebration, scheduled for Friday, June 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at Unity Park. This event, organized in partnership with local organizations including the Urban League of the Upstate, the Greenville County Section of the National Council of Negro Women, and the NAACP, will feature community-focused activities that celebrate Black history and culture. Attendance is free.
On June 20, Mauldin will host its annual cultural celebration from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the outdoor amphitheater located at 101 E. Butler Road. This family-friendly event will include live entertainment, local vendors, and food trucks, encouraging guests to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Outside food and beverages are not allowed, and attendance is free.
Moreover, on the evening of June 18, Juneteenth GVL’s “Toast to Freedom” networking event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Southern First Bank in Greenville. This 21-and-over event will include light refreshments and an opportunity for community interaction, with tickets priced at $30.
Fountain Inn will host a community festival on June 19 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring live performances, traditional soul food, and a variety of family-friendly activities. This event aims to celebrate the history and importance of Juneteenth while fostering community spirit, and it is free to attend.
Finally, the BEC Freedom Gala will be held on June 20 in Spartanburg, honoring local individuals and organizations for their contributions to the community. This event will feature a red-carpet experience, community awards, a runway show, and music. VIP admission will offer enhanced access, including exclusive drinks, food, and seating.
