Walter Cho, Chairman and CEO of Korean Air and Hanjin Group, has been awarded the title of 2026 Asia Airline Executive of the Year by CAPA – Centre for Aviation. The announcement was made during the 2026 CAPA Airline Leader Summit Asia, which took place from October 1 to 2 at New Chitose Airport in Sapporo, Japan.
The award recognizes industry leaders for their strategic decision-making and impact on the aviation sector. CAPA’s panel praised Cho for his effective management during the COVID-19 pandemic and his leadership in merging Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, a process that is set to be completed with the new unified airline launching on December 17, 2026.
Marco Navarria, Senior Director of Content & Marketing at CAPA, expressed his enthusiasm for Cho’s recognition, stating, “We are delighted to recognise Walter Cho as our Asia Airline Executive of the Year. His visionary leadership has been transformative not only for the airline but for the region as a whole.” Navarria emphasized Cho’s commitment to strategic partnerships as essential for the industry’s future.
In addition to the award, Cho engaged in a one-on-one interview during the summit, where he shared insights with global aviation leaders and outlined the strategic vision for the integrated airline. He highlighted the enhanced benefits that will be available to passengers in the future.
This accolade adds to Cho’s growing list of recognitions. In 2023, he received the Air Transport World (ATW) Excellence in Leadership Award, and he was named Korea Executive of the Year by the Korean Academic Society of Business Administration for 2024.
Walter Cho’s leadership continues to influence the aviation industry, and the upcoming launch of the integrated airline marks a significant milestone in his career.
