The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) launched its 31st edition today, showcasing its enhanced status as an A-list festival recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF). This accreditation underscores the festival’s growing relevance and prestige within the global film industry.
Festival director Jung Han-seok expressed pride in the achievement, stating that it offers “clear and tangible external validation” of BIFF’s international standing. In an email interview, he noted that the festival has long been respected within the industry and hopes that this official recognition will boost confidence among international filmmakers and industry professionals.
Significantly, starting this year, BIFF will be among only six major film festivals worldwide, and the sole representative from Asia, to offer a pathway to eligibility for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. This new designation highlights the festival’s role in promoting Asian cinema on a global platform.
