Barrick Mining has successfully completed its 59th Participatory Environmental Monitoring exercise at the Pueblo Viejo Gold Mine in the Dominican Republic, as announced on October 5. Established in 2012, this quarterly program engages local stakeholders to monitor air and water quality, as well as noise levels surrounding the mine.
During the exercise, community participants collected samples alongside technical teams at treated-water discharge points and adjacent waterways. The samples are then analyzed by independent laboratories, with the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo involved in the process since 2021.
Carlos Sánchez Alegre, the Sustainability and Permitting Lead for Barrick Pueblo Viejo, stated that recent monitoring results indicate that water quality complies with existing standards, highlighting improvements in the Margajita stream and its confluence with the Yuna River.
In addition to the environmental monitoring, Barrick announced that it has secured a 15-year renewal for the operating license of its North Mara Gold Mine in Tanzania.
The Pueblo Viejo mine is located approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Santo Domingo and is jointly owned, with Barrick holding a 60% interest and Newmont owning the remaining 40%.
