The 15th Annual SARA Rail Conference and Exhibition is set to take place in Johannesburg from October 20 to 23, drawing key figures from Africa’s railway sector. The event, hosted by the Southern African Railways Association (SARA), will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre.
This year’s theme, “Reimagining Rail: Unlocking Investment and Industrialisation for Growth & Connectivity Across Africa,” aims to address challenges and opportunities within the industry. Railway operators, government officials, investors, infrastructure developers, manufacturers, and technology firms will gather to discuss the current state and future of rail transport.
As nations across the continent seek to enhance rail infrastructure and foster regional corridors, discussions will emphasize the need to improve the movement of goods and support industrial expansion. For Southern Africa, investment in rail infrastructure remains a central topic. Authorities point to issues such as aging infrastructure, outdated rolling stock, and inefficient cross-border networks as both challenges and opportunities for new investments and partnerships.
The conference will also explore strategies for collaboration between governments and the private sector to advance projects from the planning stage to implementation. This will involve discussions on investment frameworks and public-private partnerships aimed at improving regional connectivity.
Another significant focus will be on developing Southern African Development Community (SADC) corridors and enhancing freight movement across borders. Experts are expected to discuss what is required to transition these strategic plans into operational rail corridors.
Technology and digital transformation will also play a critical role in the conversations, as stakeholders seek ways to bolster the efficiency, safety, and overall performance of railway systems.
The event will feature an exhibition where companies along the railway value chain can showcase their products and services, providing networking opportunities and avenues for new business collaborations.
With Africa aiming to enhance trade connections and foster integrated regional economies, rail is increasingly recognized as a crucial component. The SARA Rail 2026 conference will offer a platform for industry leaders to share insights and consider actionable steps toward developing robust infrastructure and sustainable growth.
