President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have reached an “energy ceasefire” agreement, aiming to reduce tensions in their ongoing conflict. Trump stated in a social media post, “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!”
The White House has been contacted for details regarding how the agreement was brokered and what actions may follow, but there has been no immediate confirmation from either Russia or Ukraine about this claimed ceasefire.
This announcement follows a conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed a contentious deal to supply diesel fuel to markets. The talks with high-ranking Ukrainian and U.S. officials, including Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, began shortly after the diesel deal was revealed last Friday. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly criticized this agreement, with Trump suggesting on Saturday that Ukraine might benefit from new leadership to facilitate negotiation.
President Zelensky also called for a ceasefire earlier on Sunday. In an interview with ABC News, he expressed willingness for an energy ceasefire, stating, “OK, if they want energy ceasefire, we are open for this. Don’t attack us. Don’t kill our children. We will stop attack your diesel. And I think it’s a fair deal.”
The circumstances leading up to Trump’s announcement remain unclear, and further details are expected as the situation develops.
