The Detroit Pistons are reportedly exploring a potential trade to acquire Austin Reaves from the Los Angeles Lakers. This move aims to enhance the team’s lineup alongside star guard Cade Cunningham.
Last season, the Pistons showcased their young talent, finishing as the best team in the Eastern Conference during the regular season. With an emphasis on development, the team focused this summer on solidifying its roster, including extending Ausar Thompson’s contract and securing a deal with center Jalen Duren.
Jalen Duren agreed to a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract, ending a lengthy restricted free agency negotiation. His agent, Chafie Fields, confirmed the deal to ESPN, highlighting Duren’s significance to the Pistons.
Despite these additions, the Pistons are still seeking an additional shooter. Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz suggested that the Pistons could offer Ron Holland II, a recent No. 5 overall pick, along with draft capital as part of a trade package for Reaves. Swartz noted that finding a wing player capable of creating their own shot would be crucial for maintaining offensive momentum when Cunningham is off the court.
If the trade for Reaves proceeds, Detroit would benefit from his recently signed contract with the Lakers, which is a four-year, $180 million deal. This agreement allows the Lakers to gain more financial flexibility while potentially securing Reaves’ services for the long term with the Pistons.
Reaves has shown steady improvement as a player, and the Pistons believe he would be an ideal addition to their roster. Combining Reaves with Cunningham could establish a potent duo, positioning Detroit for a deep postseason run in the upcoming season.
As the Pistons continue to strategize for the future, potential negotiations with the Lakers could unfold soon, making the team one to watch closely as the offseason progresses.
