Vice President JD Vance has publicly stated that he would not choose to watch the livestream of the impending execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, and expressed skepticism about whether the planned public execution by the Pentagon would actually take place.
During a recent appearance after voting in Ohio’s midterm elections, Vance remarked, “I see these announcements. I don’t know that that’s actually going to happen.” He added, “Now, that said, I mean, look, if it’s through livestream, I’m not going to be watching it.”
Hasan is set to be executed by firing squad, a method that has not been used for military executions since World War II. Vance commented that focusing on the execution method may distract from the severity of Hasan’s actions, which resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals and injuries to 32 others during one of the deadliest shootings on an American military base.
“This is a guy who committed, in my view, the worst terrorist attack on American soil outside of 9/11,” Vance stated. He emphasized the context of Hasan’s crimes, noting that he targeted Army soldiers whom he was supposed to help. “He took them at their most vulnerable and gunned down these people where they lived.”
Vance hopes people will remember the gravity of Hasan’s actions amidst discussions on the execution process. “So whatever the controversy is about the method of the execution, I hope that people don’t forget that this is a guy who brutally murdered a lot of innocent people,” he said.
As discussions surrounding Hasan’s execution continue, the date for the execution and its logistics remain to be finalized by the authorities.
