In the early hours of Wednesday, Denys Sienik, Ukraine’s top diplomat in Washington, alerted U.S. lawmakers to sudden restrictions on military-grade Starlink terminals that Ukraine relies on for its defense. Sienik emphasized that this change could benefit Russia during the ongoing war and complicate Ukraine’s ability to protect its civilians from attacks.
As the day progressed, other Ukrainian officials expressed concern that former President Donald Trump may have influenced the decision, suggesting he instructed Elon Musk, who owns the company behind Starlink, to limit Ukraine’s access to the satellite communication systems. “Obviously, this action cannot be a coincidence and is connected to the current political situation,” said Serhii Beskrestnov, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The allegations of Trump’s involvement have not been acknowledged by the White House, reflecting broader tensions in the U.S.-Ukraine relationship that have intensified in recent weeks. As Trump has advocated for an end to the conflict, these developments could further strain diplomatic ties.
U.S. lawmakers have yet to respond publicly to Sienik’s urgent call for clarity regarding the restrictions imposed on Starlink, which plays a crucial role in military and civilian communications for Ukraine. Concerns about the potential impact of these restrictions continue to mount amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
