Newly released video footage from a July incident in Senatobia, Mississippi, shows the chaotic moments leading up to the fatal shooting of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley by police. The video captures events as five police officers responded to a Walmart parking lot in pursuit of two women suspected of stealing diapers and baby clothes.
The video depicts a gray sedan, occupied by Kohen, his mother, and another woman, reversing into a parked car as officers approach. Officers are seen directing the driver to stop. Shortly after the vehicle halts, the driver accelerates again, veering left and appearing to move toward at least one officer. In response, at least one officer discharged his weapon into the vehicle.
The incident raised serious questions about the justification for the officer’s use of lethal force. The Mississippi attorney general’s office announced on Monday that it would not pursue criminal charges against the officer involved in the shooting.
The video compilation, showcasing body camera footage from the responding officers along with surveillance images, was first published by a local outlet, Darkhorse Press. Verification of the video’s authenticity came from a law enforcement official, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. An analysis conducted by The New York Times, Mississippi Today, and Verite News confirmed that the footage corresponds with additional video captured by a bystander during the incident.
As investigations continue, the community remains on edge following the tragic event, with authorities expected to provide further updates regarding the case in the coming weeks.
