A new US intelligence report indicates that Iran has significantly escalated efforts to target American diplomats and officials in the Middle East. The report, referenced by Axios, reveals that plots against US personnel are now at “advanced stages.”
This intelligence memo was directed to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Concerns have also been raised about the potential for Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen to extend their attacks beyond Saudi Arabia to other countries in the region.
In response to the evolving situation, the US State Department has ordered the departure of non-emergency personnel and their family members from Saudi Arabia. A spokesperson for the department, Tommy Pigott, addressed claims that similar orders would be issued for multiple Gulf embassies. He stated, “This is inaccurate. The US Department of State issued an ordered departure for non-emergency US government employees and their family members in Saudi Arabia only,” via a post on X.
As the situation develops, US officials remain vigilant regarding the safety of American diplomats stationed in the region.
