Belarus advised its citizens on Sunday to avoid nonessential travel to six European countries—France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Albania—due to ongoing protests related to pensions, housing, education, and corruption. This recommendation follows a sharp deterioration in the political situation across these nations.
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry expressed concerns about mass demonstrations, the alleged excessive use of force by law enforcement, and arbitrary detentions. These developments prompted warnings that curfews and states of emergency could be enacted, potentially disrupting public transportation, internet access, and communications.
For Belarusians currently in these countries, the ministry urged caution and advised them to avoid large gatherings and areas of protest. Individuals were also encouraged to monitor updates from local authorities as well as Belarusian diplomatic missions.
Additionally, the ministry suggested that citizens leave these countries using available commercial travel routes if conditions worsen. It noted that Belarusian diplomatic missions might have limited staff, potentially affecting the availability of consular and legal assistance. Citizens were encouraged to save the emergency contact details of these missions in advance.
