In recent months, Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone has seen a marked increase in tourism, with an average of 14 percent of visitors to the Dominican Republic exploring the historic district, according to Tourism Minister David Collado. This represents a significant rise from the previous estimate of 7 percent, although specific timelines for this increase were not provided.
The Colonial Zone, known for its centuries-old architecture, boutique hotels, and charming courtyard restaurants, is becoming a more popular destination among those vacationing in the country. Collado shared these statistics during a recent event unveiling restored sections of Calle Colón and Calle Hostos, part of a broader initiative to enhance the historic district.
The ministry’s ongoing restoration efforts appear to be positively impacting visitor interest. Historical sites and local ambiance are among the many attributes that have drawn travelers to the Colonial Zone, which has long been recognized for its unique charm. The area is not only home to significant monuments but also invites exploration at local shops and cafés nestled in its old buildings.
Accommodations in the Colonial Zone have contributed to its growing appeal. Notably, the Casas del XVI is now part of IHG’s Vignette Collection, linking its collection of restored historic houses with a global hotel network. Additionally, the recently opened Kimpton Las Mercedes contributes further to the boutique hotel offerings in the area, catering to visitors looking for unique lodging experiences.
The improvements to the streets aim to enhance accessibility for both pedestrians and vehicles while preserving the area’s historic character. Collado mentioned that the remaining rehabilitation work is slated for completion by December. Furthermore, he indicated ongoing developments related to cruise tourism, although specific details about itineraries or launch dates were not disclosed.
As more visitors discover the Colonial Zone, it solidifies its reputation as a cultural gem within the Dominican Republic, offering rich history, vibrant atmosphere, and a welcoming environment for exploration.
