During a recent 3,900-mile road trip from California to Boston, a couple undertook a unique mission: delivering seven seedlings of giant sequoias to friends across the country. Twilight fell in Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley National Park as the couple parked their minivan and unloaded four potted seedlings onto a cart at their campsite.
A nearby camper observed the scene with curiosity, asking why anyone would transport trees for a camping trip. The couple explained that they were carrying giant-sequoia seedlings, plants they intended to share with friends who had chosen special locations to plant them.
The couple’s journey was inspired by their visit to California’s majestic sequoias during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. They were struck by the trees’ resilience, which symbolized life and endurance during uncertain times. Their goal was to share that spirit of resilience with loved ones, traversing the nation to do so.
Throughout their trip, they encountered a mix of intrigue and admiration from people they met along the way, who were drawn to the iconic trees. The couple hopes that by planting these seedlings, they can create lasting connections to the giant sequoias, which are known to outlive generations.
