The SebastianStrong Foundation has announced the Discovery Science Award for 2027, aimed at funding research that develops targeted and less toxic treatments for childhood cancers. The foundation seeks to support early-stage discoveries that could enhance options for children whose available treatment alternatives are limited.
Previous funding initiatives by the foundation have focused on innovative therapies, including CAR-T treatments for rhabdomyosarcoma, cellular therapies for osteosarcoma, and focused ultrasound research for diffuse midline glioma. These efforts are intended to facilitate the transition of promising research into clinical applications.
Eligibility and Funding Details
Eligible applicants must be institutions or organizations based in the United States and focus their research specifically on pediatric cancer. Projects must aim to create treatments that are more targeted and less toxic, with a clear path toward clinical trials within 1 to 3 years. Ongoing clinical trials are not eligible for funding.
Each submitting institution may submit a maximum of two letters of intent, and internal selection processes will apply. Applicants are required to disclose any conflicts of interest, and the letters must be written in language understandable to nonscientific readers. Inclusion of the principal investigator’s CV or biography is also mandatory.
Funding for the award typically reaches a maximum of $500,000, though exceptionally strong proposals might qualify for higher amounts. Indirect costs are covered but cannot exceed 15% of the total funding request. Applicants must specify the amount of funding requested and the duration of their project.
