Indiana University football secured a crucial win over Minnesota on Saturday, defeating the Golden Gophers 23-16 in overtime. The victory brought the Hoosiers’ record to 8-1 and marked their second consecutive overtime triumph following a similar victory against Michigan the previous week.
Despite a rocky performance that included two turnovers and a missed field goal, Charlie Becker emerged as a standout player for Indiana. The starting receiver recorded eight receptions for 149 yards, including a critical touchdown catch that helped the team clinch the win. His performance was particularly impressive given that Indiana was operating with a backup quarterback.
Head coach Curt Cignetti made a pivotal decision to substitute Grant Wilson for Josh Hoover in the second half, a move that ultimately paid off. With Indiana trailing 16-13 and only 19 seconds remaining, Wilson connected with Becker on a 33-yard pass, setting the stage for kicker Paddy McAteer to tie the game with a 60-yard field goal.
In overtime, on the first play from scrimmage, Wilson again found Becker, this time for a 35-yard touchdown. Minnesota attempted to respond, advancing to the three-yard line, but Indiana’s defense held firm, securing the win with a critical sack of Gophers quarterback Drake Lindsey.
After the game, Becker expressed pride in the team’s ability to perform under pressure. “We never lost faith,” he said. “We just kept pushing until the very end.”
This win keeps Indiana in strong contention as they look towards their next match-up. The Hoosiers will aim to continue their momentum as they head into the latter part of the season.
On a personal note, Becker is a junior, making him eligible for the 2027 NFL Draft. He is currently projected as a potential first-round draft pick, with analysts noting his rising profile following his performance against Minnesota.
